Mike Russell is Minister for UK Negotiations on Scotland’s Place in Europe, and MSP for Argyll & Bute.  He is also professor of culture and governance at the University of Glasgow.

After graduating in Scottish history and literature from the University of Edinburgh, Mike began a career as a TV producer and wrote the first of seven books.  He was chief executive of the SNP from 1994 and won election to the Scottish Parliament when it was inaugurated in 1999.  He lost his seat in 2003, but was re-elected in 2007 and joined Alex Salmond’s first government as Minister for Environment.  In 2009 he became Minister for Culture, External Affairs and the Constitution (the rest of his time was his own).    He was shortly promoted to Cabinet Secretary for Education, a post he held till 2014.  He left the Cabinet when Nicola Sturgeon took over as First Minister, but was then recalled in 2016 to take charge of the Brexit negotiations as they affect Scotland.
